About the Plaque

German surrender to 1st Canadian Army

The plaque at the park is a replication of a plaque on “Hotel de Wereld” in Wageningen, the Netherlands, in the province of Gelerland.  The plaque commemorates the German surrender to the First Canadian Army on May 5, 1945.

On May 14th, 2017, H.R.H. Princess Margriet of the Netherlands unveiled a plaque at Liberation Memorial Park in Goderich to commemorate the German surrender to the First Canadian Army after a hard fought struggle to liberate the Netherlands from Nazi occupation.

Following the unveiling, Princess Margriet signed a scroll of remembrance that lists each of the twenty Huron County fallen during the campaign.  This scroll now hangs in a place of honour at of Goderich town hall.
