Canadian youth have varying degrees of awareness of Canada's contribution in the liberation of Holland. If you are a young Canadian of Dutch descent, the history of seventy years ago is part of your personal family history. Other Canadians though are less connected and aware of this part of our history.
It is our goal to activate youth awareness by working with local school boards and private schools in Huron County in educating our youth on the events of 1944-45, and to reach out to the youth of Holland to gain a better appreciation of the Canadian contribution. We wish to encourage the pairing of Canadian schools with Dutch schools, and facilitate a trans-Atlantic dialogue.
We are approaching the local schools seeking their support to commemorate the royal visit by placing an emphasis on encouraging students to learn more about the circumstances of the Dutch people during the war, and the Canadian contribution in liberating Holland. We would encourage the pairing of schools in Huron County with some in Holland to use our internet connections to promote a "youth to youth" dialogue. We hope our high school history departments would be energized by their participation in this project. We also want to encourage our youth to speak up and participate in our online petition to invite Princess Margerite to visit us here to Huron County in 2017.
